Many of my readers ask me what they should bear in mind when choosing personal care products. A very important concept to learn is the difference between hydrating and moisturizing. To explain it properly I asked Norma Palkoska to write something about it...
"The loss of the skin's natural humidity causes a decrease in its elasticity and the arrival of wrinkles. This decrease is due to internal and external issues. Among the first, we might find: ultraviolet rays, changes in temperatures, the wind, the cold, cigarettes, pollution and products we use daily, such as soaps, detergents and inadequate cosmetics for our skin type.
Among the internal factors, we should consider that any changes in the balance of our metabolism will bring unwanted consequences to our skin. They might be anemia, nutritional deficiencies, hypo-thyroidism, etc.
It is very frequent to confuse hydrating with moisturizing, but they work in a different way...
To Hydrate is an active process which works to reestablish the skin's normal humidity. This is achieved by the adequate use of cosmetic products containing proteins, amino-acids, urea, alfa hydroxi-acids, vegetable extracts, etc. But also through the responsible intake of water.
To Moisturize is a passive process which works to help retain the water in our skin through substances capable of maintaining the humidity on the surface: DNA and hyaluronic acid, for instance.
Cosmetically speaking, both functions are very important and work well together to achieve a healthy and beautiful skin."
Thank you Norma, as usual!
